Can links hurt or dilute my web site’s ranking?

No, according to Matt Cutts at Google, links will not harm your site’s ranking. The reason for this is that if they were, competitors would build more links to harm your site’s ranking or build links from spam sites. Google protects web sites from this possible scenario, but they also put filters in place so that the system is not gamed. There is a myth propagated in the SEO industry that web sites can be “sandboxed” or lose ranking. This is only true for web sites that try to trick search engines via “on-page” black-hat optimizations, such as cloaking keywords, keyword stuffing or using unwarranted redirects. A site can never be sandboxed via links, but if Google detects an unusual amount of links, it will most likely ignore them and will not count them.

How long does it take to see results?
